Hanson keeps cool in ‘snide’ assembly

Vicki and Joy
Clashing…Vicki Dunne and Joy Burch
NEWLY elected opposition leader Jeremy Hanson was one of the few quiet members at an unruly question time in the legislative assembly today.

Unusually, Hanson remained silent for most of the proceedings, while his new deputy Alistair Coe fired up about increased parking fees and emergency waiting times.

Speaker Vicki Dunne often struggled to control members, raising her voice several times at Attorney General Simon Corbell when he interjected.

“I shouldn’t have to use my mother’s voice with you,” she told him.

“You’re certainly not my mother,” was his reply.

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher was warned by Dunne against getting too “personal” or “snide” after she used a question about the opening of the arboretum to take aim at former Opposition Leader Zed Seselja for contesting Senator Gary Humphries.

“I didn’t see one Liberal member at the opening, apart from poor old Gary Humphries, smiling away completely unaware of what was to happen,” she said.

She then swiftly moved on to shadow treasurer Brendan Smyth: “They didn’t sell whiskey, I suppose if they did Brendan would be [at the opening].”

A delay in the upgrade of Taylor Primary School was also addressed, with education minister Joy Burch clashing with Dunne for repeatedly failing to directly answer Liberal Andrew Wall’s question on “why the school got so run down in the first place.”
