LONG-TIME Canberran and former President of the Senate, Margaret Reid, today launched the annual ACT Heritage Festival at the Civic Merry-Go-Round.
The launch also formed a kind of celebration of one of Canberra’s much-loved landmarks and a new and informative sign about the Merry-Go-Round, which has been in the same spot since 1974 when it was bought for the people of Canberra to help liven up the centre of Civic, but which in reality marks its 99th birthday this year.
It was originally built in Melbourne in 1914 and was one of the carnival ride attractions on the St Kilda Foreshore.
This year’s theme for the Heritage Festival, “Community Milestones,” has been inspired by the Centenary of Canberra and in this special year the ACT program highlights Canberra’s colourful history and its more recent achievements.
The National Trust is running more than 10 events until April 28, detailed information can be found at www.nationaltrust.org.au/act/Heritage-Festival.
