Young delegates gather for UN debate

THE annual Model United Nations Assembly is being held in Canberra this weekend for the 17th time.

Hosted by the Rotary Club of Canberra’s Sunrise Club, teams of years 10 and 11 students will travel from as far away as Burnie High School in Tasmania to debate issues at the House of Representatives Chamber of Old Parliament House on August 17 and 18.

The program includes the Model United Nations Assembly competition on Saturday and Sunday, dinner at the ANU on Saturday night and the awards on Sunday afternoon.

The young participants will debate resolutions from the following list;

  • Self-determination of French Polynesia.
  • The situation in the Syrian Arab Republic.
  • Political declaration on the peaceful resolution of conflicts in Africa.
  • Protection of global climate for present and future generations of humankind and achievement of harmony  with nature.
  • Promotion of new and renewable sources of energy.
  • Protection of migrants.
  • Agriculture development and food security.
  • Permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
  • Nuclear disarmament.
  • Moratorium on Lethal Automated Robotics.
