Smoke at the Benjamin Offices

fire brigade

FIREFIGHTERS have evacuated approximately 5,000 workers from the Benjamin Offices on Chan Street, Belconnen as crews investigate a smell of smoke.

No active fire has been found.

ACT Fire & Rescue firefighters are using thermal imaging equipment to try and identify the source of the smoke from the plant room. At this stage, the air conditioning unit appears to have been the cause of the smell of smoke.

The Hazardous Materials Unit has been called to assist as ACT Fire & Rescue begin to conduct ventilation operations and atmospheric monitoring before staff can return to the building.

Firefighters have given the all-clear and have made the area safe.

The air conditioning unit was not the cause of the smell however it did disperse the smell through the area.

The smell of the smoke has been confirmed to have come from the lift / elevator motor room. Maintenance crews are now investigating the source of the smell in the plant room and workers are expected to return to the area shortly.
