It’s the annual “SoundOut” festival of free improvisation, free jazz and experimental music, and this year to be staged in the sophisticated surrounds of the ANU’s Drill Hall Gallery.

This is the sixth year of an event described by its indefatigable director, Richard Johnson, as an “incredible, bristling explorative sonic arts event”.

He says the guest artists, from Australia, Austria, Germany, NZ, Norway and Switzerland, are bound to replenish ears and minds even as they combine, mix, cross-fertilise, and “move sound mountains to inspire inquiring ears”.

The impressive international lineup includes free jazz trio the Frode Gjerstad trio from Norway, Swiss saxophonist Christian Kobi, Swiss electronic artist Jason Kahn, minimalist electro-acoustic artist Klaus Filip from Austria, and NZ avant-garde pianist Hermione Johnson.

From closer to home come Australian wind trio Psithurism, our own jazz trumpeter Miroslav Bukovsky, minimalists the Great Waitress Trio, bassists Clayton Thomas, Melbourne vocalist Carolyn Connors, guitarist Sam McAuliffe, drummer Evan Dorrian and electronic artist Paul Heslin.
