Behold Weston Park’s boulodrome!

SHANE Rattenbury has announced the completion of upgrade works at Weston Park in Yarralumla and the new multi-purpose gravel platform and public boulodrome.

“Visitors to Weston Park can now use the upgraded facilities including a new modern picnic shelter with barbecues, picnic settings and a water refill station. The upgrade also includes an accessible pedestrian path which connects to the popular shared use perimeter path,” Shane said.

“Weston Park is one of Canberra’s favourite parks. Located on the southern shore of Lake Burley Griffin it is home to some of the oldest urban trees in the ACT. The park is a great place to relax for a picnic, go for a walk or take children to play. It attracted over 1.3 million interstate and international visitors last year with its great vistas across the lake to Government House and the National Arboretum.

“These improvements will help ensure this valued park remains one of Canberra’s great attractions into the future, so residents and visitors alike can continue to enjoy everything Weston Park has to offer.

“The suite of works at Weston Park has included the construction of a shared perimeter path, improvements to the Kurrajong Point car park and the wading pond, and now the new picnic shelter. The total cost of these works has been $2.2m. These works were funded via the Town and District Park Improvement Program which undertakes upgrades to significant district parks across the ACT. This program has also seen improvements at Black Mountain Peninsula and Eddison Park as well as the development of Master Plans and Conservation Management Plans for Haig Park, Weston Park and Tuggeranong Town Park.”

Construction of a new multi-purpose gravel platform and public boulodrome has also been completed in the park, where the public can play petanque and bocce.

“The Capital Petanque Club received a $61,270 Sport and Recreation grant to build the new boulodrome on a gravel surface in the park,” Shane said.

“The Capital Petanque Club has done a fantastic job in designing the boulodrome. The club has worked closely with both Sport and Recreation Services and TAMS to realise this facility and it is a welcome addition to Weston Park. The boulodrome, 54 metres by 18 metres, will be shared with other clubs as well as the public. The clubs will have the opportunity to further promote their sports in such a lovely setting.”
