Man charged over Calwell murder

ACT Policing has charged a 40-year-old man with murder following an incident in Calwell yesterday afternoon (Saturday, February 28) in which a 28-year-old woman was killed.

Police were called to the Duggan St apartment block around 4.40pm, responding to reports of a disturbance at the location.

Upon attending, police found forced entry to the apartment, and the woman on the floor in the laundry at the rear of the apartment. She had suffered a severe head trauma. An axe was lying next to the woman.

A crime scene was established at the location and a homicide investigation was immediately commenced.

The alleged offender was taken into custody by police and conveyed to the ACT Watch House. AFP Forensics Crime Scene Investigators attended and conducted a thorough examination of the crime scene, removing a number of items as evidence.

The 40-year-old man has been charged with murder and will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court tomorrow (Monday, March 2).

Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have any information that could assist police to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via https://act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.


UPDATE: Sky News reports there have been dramatic scenes in court as the family of the deceased 28 year old Tara Costigan angrily confronted the accused 40 year old Marcus Rappel.
