Mick claims victory over Melrose High traffic

mapomel

MICK Gentleman has tabled a Vulnerable Road User report in the Legislative Assembly showing that a range of road safety measures implemented by Roads ACT one year ago have improved safety at Melrose High School.

“There was a reduction in the speed limit to 60 kilometres per hour along Athllon Drive either side of the Beasley Street intersection between 3 pm and 3.30 pm on school days as well as changes to the timing of the pedestrian crossing traffic lights,” Mick said.

“In August 2014 Roads ACT commenced an evaluation of the changes. The evaluation included discussions with various stakeholders, the school and ACT Policing as well as a technical analysis of speed, volume and crash data and observations of crossing behaviours at the intersection.

“The evaluation report shows the measures were successful including:

achieving a reduction in travelling speeds between 3 pm and 3.30 pm. The south bound direction showed a speed reduction of approximately 9 to 10 km/h, the northbound direction towards Woden showed a speed reduction of around 3 to 5 km/h

  • changes to the traffic signal arrangements have been well received by the school
  • no adverse feedback from the general community in relation to the changes.

“This is a good example of Roads ACT working closely with the school community, applying its traffic management and road safety expertise, and coming up with a solution that has improved safety and accessibility with minimal inconvenience for the travelling public,” Minister Gentleman concluded.
