SHANE Rattenbury says that leak investigation works carried out at the Canberra Olympic Pool (COP) in Civic this week are complete, and the indoor 50m pool has been reopened.

“Over the course of this week a number of leaks were detected, however we are waiting on the official report to determine whether these can be reliably fixed and what the cost of remediation might be,” Shane said.

“Once we have this information we will then be able to make a clear decision on the future of the outdoor pools and whether they can be reopened for the summer season.

“The COP is an aging facility, and while we anticipate that approximately 70% of the leaks are a result of the outdoor dive and toddler pools, the investigations that were carried out this week have allowed us to investigate any leaks that may also be attributable to the indoor structure.

“The latest investigative works built on work that had been done previously and isolated each of the pool systems so that all of the elements of the pool structure could be thoroughly tested.

“We are expecting the final report from the contractors within the next month and at that time we will be able to provide the community with further information on the future of the outdoor pools.

“I’d like to thank the community for their patience this week during the closure of the indoor 50m pool, and I’m pleased to say that the indoor pool has now reopened.”

A new boiler was also installed at the COP during the leak investigation works this week, and the outdoor pools will remain closed at least for the winter period.
