CATS awards fall victim to virus, but wait, there’s more

CANBERRA’S CAT Awards ceremony is the latest arts event to fall victim to the coronavirus, with news that the ANU School of Music is closing its performance venues after guidance issued by Australia’s chief medical officer about gatherings of 500+ people.

Founder of the CATS Coralie Wood.

CATS founder Coralie Wood said on Sunday (March 15) night that there would be a meeting with Llewellyn Hall on Monday, meaning that she could not say whether this would be an outright cancellation of the planned April 18 gala theatrical night or another postponement, as happened early in the year because of the bushfires.

More immediately, the closure of Llewellyn Hall means the cancellation of Canberra Symphony Orchestra’s “Llewellyn One: Organ Symphony” this Wednesday and Thursday, and the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s concert on Saturday, March 21.

“Kapsberger and the Secrets of Music,” hosted by Latitude 3, will not go ahead at Albert Hall on Wednesday, March 18.

Belconnen Arts Centre is postponing all “Dance for Wellbeing” classes for the foreseeable future, but advises participants to keep dancing at home using the centre’s free online instructional videos available at youtube.com by entering “Belconnen Arts Centre.”

Meantime so far, Canberra International Music Festival is maintaining a watching brief on the implications of the virus, while smaller gigs at the Canberra Comedy Festival and art gallery exhibitions will continue  as normal.
