Dara shines at Wakakirri

Year 10 dancer Aimee Halley from Daramalan College.

DARAMALAN College in Dickson has taken out the Secondary Story of the Year Award for its story-dance video entered in the 2020 Wakakirri Challenge.

As well, the ACT had two other National Story of the Year nominees from a total of 18 finalists nationally, with the inclusion of Majura Primary School and Rosary Primary School, both in Watson. All three schools were chosen for their well-conceived performances and the relevant and important messages they explored in their story-dances.

For many schools, a bright spot among lockdowns and virtual learning has been participating in this year’s online Wakakirri Story-Dance Challenge, an education program for schools which develops student engagement and wellbeing through participation in the performing arts.

Established 28 years ago, the challenge normally takes place in professional theatres across the country, but the 2020 festival was restructured into an online-only format because of COVID-19 restrictions.

The judging panel was made up of Kat Hoyos, Andrew McFarlane, Luke Carroll and Emma Watkins.

Wakakirri will return to theatres nationally for its 2021 Story-Dance Festival using a covid-safe format. Performances take place in term 3 and registrations are open now.
