Hundreds of hail-damaged cars up for grabs

Hundreds of hail-damaged cars will be auctioned off

FOLLOWING the large hail storm in Canberra last month, hundreds of hail-damaged cars will be auctioned off in Hume next week.

The “simulcast” auction, held by Manheim on Monday, February 10, will be auctioning a variety of hail-damaged makes and models, which the auction house believes can be repaired.

“Our understanding is that ACT registered repairable write-offs can be repaired and re-registered locally or in another state,” says Jonothan Ellerton of Manheim.

“[But] vehicles registered in NSW that have been written off are classified as statutory write-offs and cannot be repaired or re-registered in any state.

“The benefit of hail damaged vehicles is that most of them are still structurally sound and the damage is largely cosmetic. However, buyers should do their own research on repair costs, as most of the vehicles that have been written off by insurers because they were deemed too expensive to repair. Also, broken windscreens can be costly, especially if there are rain and wiper sensors embedded in the glass.”

Due to safety concerns at the storage site, Jonothan says there will be no opportunity to physically inspect the cars in this auction.
