CANBERRA dance artists are well represented in nominations for Ausdance National’s Australian Online Dance Awards (2018 and 2019) coming up on Tuesday, December 8. QL2 Youth Dance’s “Filling the Space”, the Australian Dance Party’s “From the Vault”, and “High Kix for Frou Frou to Fruition”, choreographed by dance teacher and 2018 Canberra Young Business Women of the Year Kym Degenhart, are up for 2019 awards. Former “CityNews” artists of the year, Elizabeth Cameron Dalman and Liz Lea, are 2018 nominees, while Anca Frankenhaeuser has been nominated for “Mist”, performed blindfolded for the 40th anniversary of Canberra Dance Theatre. Also on the list are Canberra-raised artists Laura Boynes and Mark and Clare Dyson.
CANBERRA Short Film Festival is up and running again, with six screening dates in what it’s calling the “covid-modified first stage” of its 25th anniversary event running on Friday, November 20-22 and 27-29. The evening screenings will be run twice, at staggered times, and the festival hopes to return in March with 12 more screening events including the Red Carpet Night, a 25-year retrospective, the awards and screenings across Belconnen, Gungahlin, Tuggeranong and Queanbeyan. TUGGERANONG Arts Centre presents the creative results of the 2019 Craft ACT and ACT Parks and Conservation Service Spring Residency in the exhibition, “Double Vision: Corin Dam Residency”. Annika Romeyn worked at Stockyard Spur and Mt Gingera while Elizabeth Paterson created 3D works looking at the role of the Corin Dam with paper, cardboard and glue. WORKS by 34 artists which have travelled the world, including to the 2012 Edinburgh Festival, will be shown in the exhibition, “Jesus Laughing and Loving”, intended to liberate the person of Jesus from traditional images and increase his relevance for modern living. Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture, 15 Blackall Street, Barton, November 12 – December 5, Saturday/Sunday, from 10.30am-3.30pm.
A NEW online Russian film festival is available on Hyvio’s streaming platform until November 30, free and ad-free, with local subtitles. Eight Russian movies will feature, including the comedy “Another Woman”, the dramas “Core of the World”, “Ice”, about the rise and redemption of a figure skating champion, “The Story of an Appointment”, a biopic about Leo Tolstoy, “The Bolshoi”, set in the world of ballet, and the animation “The Snow Queen 3: Fire and Ice”.
