Thousands of ACT drivers ignore red lights

LAST year, on average, more than 11 drivers a day ignored red lights in the ACT, according to statistics released by ACT police.

All up, police issued more than 840 infringements and warnings, and 3430 fines to drivers ignoring red lights.

The majority of these infringements, 1450 of them, were issued on Northbourne Avenue and London Circuit, with 805 issued on Canberra Avenue, Captain Cook Crescent and Manuka Circle, and 261 issued on Barry Drive and Marcus Clarke Street.

Almost 200 infringements were issued on Drakeford Drive, Boddington Crescent and Marconi Crescent.

Other streets that drivers were hit with fines were Hindmarsh Drive, Tuggeranong Parkway, Coulter Drive and Ginninderra Drive.

Officer in charge of traffic operations, detective station sergeant Marcus Boorman says every one of these instances could have resulted in catastrophic injuries.

“Every time a driver fails to stop for a red light there is the real chance they will collide with a pedestrian or vehicle that has the green light. Red lights are not negotiable. You must stop for every red light – for your own safety and that of all other road users,” he says.

“My message is simple. Do not risk it. Pay attention when driving, be prepared for lights to change and stop every time for the red.”

This month, Mr Boorman says police will be focusing on drivers who ignore red lights.

Police issued 840 infringements and warnings in a year? That’s an appalling number. Less than 3 per day. And why are Police issuing warnings for red light offences?

“……The requirements of the Road Transport (General) Withdrawal of Infringement Notices Guidelines 2019 (No1),6, requires that any red light offence, including entering the marked foot crossing after the red light has illuminated, will ordinarily be refused unless a defence at law can be substantiated with documentary evidence.”

I see at least that many red light offences going to work in the morning and again in the afternoon. At about $450 a pop, 6 offences per day is just shy of $1 millon per year. That should be more than enough to fund a couple of additional traffic police.

And where are the red light cameras on the Tuggeranong Parkway?

The red light cameras on Tuggeranong Parkway/Drakeford Drive (I assume you were including Drakeford Drive, as there’s no traffic lights on the Parkway itself) are in the same location as those on Gungahlin Drive/GDE and Horse Park Drive. They haven’t even been thought of yet.

We all know that the Government has a history of providing infrastructure well after it’s needed – step 1, release the land; step 2, approve housing; step 3, build access roads; step 4, make sure the roads can handle the amount of traffic (if not, widen them); step 5, make sure the roads are safe. Most of Tuggeranong is just reaching step 5, large swathes of Gungahlin are still in the throes of step 4 – especially the town centre, which still has a long way to go.
