FOLLOWING a long summer of fighting fires, all members of the ACT Emergency Services Agency and ACT Parks and Conservation have been named the 2020 Canberra Citizen of the Year.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr made the announcement today (March 2), saying this significant honour recognises their outstanding efforts and co-operation in responding to the unprecedented conditions experienced during the summer.

“The ACT government would like to thank all members of the ACT Emergency Services Agency and ACT Parks and Conservation for working tirelessly to keep Canberrans safe and for the sacrifices they have made over the summer months, missing time with their families and for many volunteers, their employment,” Mr Barr said.

After the announcement, ACT Emergency Services Agency commissioner Georgeina Whelan came out and said how proud she is of the commitment, integrity and determination that every single individual within the whole team displayed during summer.

“It was a true representation of us working together to care and protect Canberra.”

The Canberra Citizen of the Year is presented each year to an individual, or a group, who have made an outstanding contribution to the Canberra community.

Representatives of the organisations will receive the Canberra Citizen of the Year Award at the main stage at the Canberra Day celebrations, 6pm, Monday, March 9.
