Artsday / Dancers take a leap into choreography

From a previous Hot to Trot, “Circle, Complete” by Sarah Long

Arts editor HELEN MUSA’s “Artsday” column signs off for the year, but there’s still loads of things to do this weekend.

“HOT to Trot” is an opportunity for QL2 Dance’s senior Quantum Leapers to step into the role of choreographer, mentored by staff and supported by collaborators and performers. This year 10 young artists supported by additional dancers have explored different models of creative practice both live and filmed to be showcased this weekend at QL2 theatre in Gorman Arts Centre, Braddon, 6pm-7.20pm, December 18-19, book here

M16 Artspace is hosting special exhibition, “Selection”, showing work from a group of 15 Canberra-based graduating postgraduate, honours and undergraduate art students in glass, ceramics, installation, photo media, drawing, print media and painting. 21 Blaxland Crescent, Griffith, this weekend (December 18 and 19) only.

“Old Man Tree” by Heide Smith

RENOWNED photographer Heide Smith is holding an exhibition of south coast photographs on screen and in print at her private gallery, 18 Monash Avenue, Tuross Heads, December 19 to January 2, by appointment. Call 4476 1171 or 0409 911 048.

“A Very NFSA Christmas” is an annual silly season combo of a Christmas classic, some kids’ holiday fun and something for all the grinches, with “Bush Christmas” starring Nicole Kidman in her first feature film, the family classic “Elf” and slasher film “Black Christmas,” at The National Film and Sound Archive, December 17-18, book here.

ELISE Walsh’s Bella Groove has decided to throw a soul party, an afternoon of live and upbeat rhythms, and favourite soul and R&B tunes from the ’60s and ’70s. There will be prizes for best “soul dressed”. Smith’s Alternative, 76 Alinga St Civic, 4pm-6pm, Sunday (December 19), book here.

BECAUSE of all the covid restrictions, Coralie Wood says, the CAT awards have been interrupted, but they are still alive, the show must go on and she’ll be presenting a smaller version of previous gala nights at Canberra Repertory Theatre, 3 Repertory Lane, Acton, 2pm-5pm, on Sunday (December 19). Free event, but RSVP to Wood at cfw@ozemail.com.au for catering purposes.
