‘Not good’: Barr reports 30 new covid cases

Chief Minister Andrew Barr.

THERE’S been a surge in covid cases in the past 24 hours, according to ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr, who announced 30 new cases just before midday (September 17).

Only 12 of the 30 were in quarantine during their entire infectious period.

Nineteen of the cases are linked to already known cases and exposure sites while 11 remain under investigation.

Mr Barr said today’s not the first time that Canberra’s seen new case numbers in the thirties.

“It is too early to know if this is a one-off but it is clear that it is not a good number,” he said.

“Today serves as a timely reminder that every time you are out in the community and you are close to other people there is a risk that you will become infected whether you are vaccinated or not.

“Covid safe measures like physical distancing, hand hygiene and masks are essential to protect yourself when you’re out of your home.”

There are eight people with covid in hospital, one of which is in intensive care requiring ventilation.
