Police bring in the dogs to arrest car-stealing duo

POLICE dogs were brought in to help officers arrest two people who allegedly stole a car, refused to pay for petrol, broke into a Hackett home and breached the COVID-19 public health direction yesterday (August 26).

Police allege that a 26-year-old Hume man and a 28-year-old Richardson woman stole a blue Nissan Pulsar from a Bonython residence.

Not long after, at about 10.50am, they drove away from a Hume service station without paying for fuel before committing a burglary at a Hackett residence at about 11.30am.

Police located the stolen car at about 12.23pm in Fyshwick and followed it to the Chisholm shopping centre, where the alleged offenders entered the shops.

It was there that police used the dogs to help them arrest the duo when they were returning to the car.

The man will face the ACT Magistrates Court charged with two counts of driving a motor vehicle without consent, burglary, minor theft, making off without payment, two counts of unlicenced driving having never held a licence, and failing to comply with direction by chief medical officer.

The woman will also face the ACT Magistrates Court charged with two counts of riding a motor vehicle without consent, breach of good behaviour obligations, trespass and failing to comply with direction by chief medical officer.
