Program helps Canberrans get back to nature

A new program designed to help Canberrans experience the “therapeutic” benefits of nature has been announced.

Landcare ACT’s Wellbeing for Nature program, funded through a $225,000 ACT government grant, was announced at the Dickson Wetlands today (December 8).

As part of the program, Canberrans will be able to take part in guided walks, and a range of conservation and horticulture activities designed to “improve” wellbeing.

“Landcare ACT’s Wellbeing Program builds on feedback from ACT Landcarers, along with international experience, which demonstrates that nature-based activities can improve individuals’ social connections, mental health, recovery and wellbeing,” said Karissa Preuss, CEO Landcare ACT.

“This program is for all Canberrans. We invite anyone interested to visit our website and register to be involved.”

Landcare volunteer, Margaret Faulkner, from McKeller, says Landcare programs are a good way to connect with the community.

“Landcare came to me at a time in my life when I wasn’t at my best, having a regular activity where I am out in the sun enjoying plants has helped improve my overall wellbeing,” says Margaret.

“Socially, Landcare has opened new doors for me and enabled me to make new friends.”
