QUEANBEYAN-Palerang’s upcoming council election has been postponed for a second time as the state’s coronavirus crisis worsens.
NSW Minister for Local Government Shelley Hancock confirmed yesterday (July 25) that the election date had been pushed back from September 4 to December 4.
Authorities were concerned the election may have had the potential to become a super-spreader event.
“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and current public health orders impacting Greater Sydney, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the Local Government elections until later this year,” Minister Hancock said.
“We have taken this step to postpone the election to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our communities, voters, polling staff and candidates.”
It’s estimated that 5.2 million voters across the state will take part in this election, which will involve 125 local councils.
Electronic voting will be available for the first time in the history of local council elections and changes to pre-poll will also take place including allowing voters 13 days to cast their ballot.
Candidate nominations will open on October 25 and close on November 3.
