CANBERRA Airport has withdrawn from taking legal action against the ACT government after federal authorities announced the removal of mask mandates in airport terminals throughout the country.

Masks will no longer be required to be worn in airport terminals from 11.59pm this Friday (June 17), following a recommendation from the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee.

Canberra Airport CEO Stephen Byron last week threatened legal action against the ACT government if they did not remove the mask mandate inside the ACT’s terminal, saying it was not only discriminatory but in breach of the ACT human rights act.

But the Airport will now pull back from the court case, expected to have started this week, following the announcement of the changed rules.

Masks will still be required on all flights throughout the country.

Mr Byron said the Airport had not been seeking a relaxation of the mask mandate inside the aircraft, just within airport buildings.
