Arrests reveal thousands of mail thefts

MORE than 1000 stolen mail items from the ACT and Batemans Bay have been recovered after ACT Police arrested two people on Sunday (May 29).

In Lawson, a 29-year-old man and 16-year-old girl were arrested, following calls to police regarding people allegedly attempting to break into mailboxes at residences.

Police attended Stockman Avenue, Lawson, just after 7am, and observed two people who matched the description provided by witnesses.

The duo ran from Police and a short foot pursuit occurred prior to their apprehension.

A nearby vehicle was identified as being linked to the duo, and police observed further items inside which are possibly linked to other offences.

On Tuesday (May 31) a search warrant was executed on the vehicle and more than 1000 items of mail were recovered, including items addressed to locations in the ACT, Batemans Bay and other NSW locations.

The man and girl will each face 23 counts of mail theft and further charges are expected to be laid.
