Artsday / ‘American Pie’ becomes satire

SHORTIS and Simpson mark 50 years since Don McLean’s landmark song with their new political satire cabaret, “American Pie”, Belconnen Arts Centre,  June 10-11.

THE Portrait Gallery is holding special, late-night event, “A Royal Hoopla”, featuring performances from burlesque queens Jazida and Rosie Rivette, live music from art-rock band Glitoris, and guest appearances from drag queen act Aaron Manhattan, DJ Charlie Villas and Tanzer. Tickets include entry into “Shakespeare to Winehouse: Icons from the National Portrait Gallery, London” across the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. NPG, 7.30pm-midnight, Friday, June 10.

THE “Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons & The Beach Boys Show” features a  band  playing hits and singing close harmonies from “Jersey Boys” hits such as “Sherry” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry”, along with Beach Boys’ numbers. The Q, Queanbeyan, 8pm, Saturday, June 11. Book here or 6285 6290.

IN ‘“Enlightenment”, Phoenix Collective will perform the world premiere of Sally Whitwell’s “Toward,” Mendelssohn’s String Quartet no 2 in A minor op 13 and Shostakovich’s String Quartet no 3 in F Major op 73. Wesley Uniting Church, 7pm, Friday, June 10.

THE Queanbeyan-Palerang Art Awards wind up this weekend at The Q Exhibition Space, Queanbeyan, showing 10am to 4pm until June 11. All welcome.

SPUTNIK Sweetheart will perform their last show for many months, built around their latest single, “Lindy Hop”, at UC Hub, 8pm, Sunday, June 12.
