Artsday / Matthew flies high with the choir

Here’s arts editor HELEN MUSA’s preview of what’s what and when this week on the local arts scene.

LLEWELLYN Choir will be flying high in a performance of English sacred music, with guest conductor, Matthew Stuckings, also a trained pilot, at the controls. Stuckings says flying and conducting are  risky, but both require careful preparation and lots of practice. “Light Eternal”, Wesley Uniting Church, Forrest, Saturday, May 28. Book here

ANCA Gallery in Dickson is combining music with art to launch a new exhibition of 12 paintings by Canberra-based German artist Stefanie Schulte, inspired by Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”, itself inspired by the landscape paintings of Marco Ricci. For the opening (6pm, Wednesday, May 25), sopranos Greta Claringbould and Sarah Mann will perform works by Vivaldi and others accompanied by Rose Holcombe at the piano. Free event. The exhibition continues until June 19.

Paul Mercurio and Tara Morice in “Strictly Ballroom.”

The new NFSA digital restoration of Baz Luhrmann’s “Strictly Ballroom” has been selected to screen at the 75th Cannes Film Festival in “Cannes Classics” tomorrow, May 24, 30 years after it launched to the world in 1992. 

COMEDIAN Urzila Carlson is one of the biggest names in comedy in Australia and NZ, known for her Netflix comedy special “Overqualified Loser”, released in 190 countries. She’ll be at the Canberra Theatre, May 26-28 in “It’s Personal”. Book here.

MADELINE Anderson (soprano), Maike Brill (alto) and  Hilda Visser-Scott (piano) appear in a concert of popular songs from the early 20th century at Wesley Music Centre, Forrest, 12.40pm-1.20pm, Wednesday, May 25. Book here.

The Sekar Langit Balinese Gamelan Ensemble

“REDISCOVERING Music”, presented by CSO bassoonist Kristen Sutcliffe offers a supportive community for people living with hearing loss. The next concert  explores the sounds of the gamelan with the Sekar Langit Balinese Gamelan Ensemble. Hellenic Club, Woden, 2pm and  5.30pm, Tuesday,  May 24. Free but registrations essential here.

ANU Orchestra, conducted by Max McBride, will play a selection of Brahms, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. Llewellyn Hall, Thursday, May 26. Free but registrations essential here.
