Covid rips through jail

Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC).

ONE in eight prisoners at Canberra’s jail are now covid positive as infections among inmates almost double in a week.

According to the Justice and Community Safety Directorate 47 inmates – of the Alexander Maconochie Centre’s (AMC) total prison population of 384  – have contracted the virus.

It’s an increase from the 27 cases among inmates recorded on May 9.

An additional 160 inmates may have been exposed to covid positive detainees during their infectious period, a directorate spokesperson said.

Fifteen jail workers have been “impacted” by covid, but none are known to have been infected because of the jail outbreak.

The spokesperson also confirmed that the AMC is not in lockdown.
