Death on the Barton Highway

AN 83-year-old woman died beside the Barton Highway, at Murrumbateman, just after 6.30pm last night (September 30) after reportedly having been struck by a Mitsubishi Triton utility.

NSW police report that the 83-year-old pedestrian was treated at the scene by witnesses, but could not be revived.

The utility driver – a 25-year-old man – was taken to Yass District Hospital for mandatory testing.

Officers from The Hume Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

The woman was one of three pedestrians killed within 45 minutes of each other in NSW yesterday. Traffic and Highway Patrol commander Trent King, said: “Long weekends are a time for families and friends to spend together, not be told that their loved one has been killed in an incident on our roads.

“I implore both road users and pedestrians to stay alert, pay attention and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

“The predicted weather for the weekend requires additional caution to be taken, so please drive with care, for the sake of all road users”.

Can I just be a pedant here – it’s driving me crazy. For the record, the Police do not establish a “crime scene”. They establish a crime scene perimeter! The crime itself established the crime scene, the Police merely establish its boundaries so they can direct their enquiries into the incident. Can we please stop this murdering of the English language. It reminds me of a relative who used to say ” Joe shot an elephant in his pyjamas” – wow, he must have had very large pyjamas!

Yeah sure, no problem being pedant on that one, but then would it really be “driving “ you crazy or “murdering” of the English language? Personally, I’m more concerned about the the article & the tragic loss of life.

So sad for the family of this woman. Murrumbateman village is a major risk to all pedestrians that need to cross the highway to public toilets, the park and the recreation grounds. Big worry for the new school opening 2023 on how to get kids across the Barton safely to use the oval for sports. This area is a major choke point for the Barton highway – bypass needs to be done now!
