Government’s response to Optus hack ‘not good enough’, say Libs

THE ACT opposition is calling on the government to take more action in replacing the driver’s licences of people affected by the Optus data hack.

It comes after the government announced yesterday that Canberrans who have been deemed “most at risk” of identity theft or fraud due to the Optus data breach will receive a new driver licence card for free.

In the ACT, every driver licence issued includes two separate number fields that, since September 1, need to be used together, and match, to verify a person’s identity.

Minister for Business Tara Cheyne said Access Canberra will prioritise those who have had both their licence number and card number compromised in the breach.

But shadow minister for regulatory services Ed Cocks says the measures are “not good enough”, urging the government to follow other jurisdictions in allowing all victims of the data breach to replace their driver’s licence numbers.

“Both Western Australia and South Australia use the same licence number and card number system as the ACT and those governments are offering to replace all affected licence numbers,” said Cocks.

“The ACT Labor-Greens Government are moving too slowly and leaving too many people at risk.

“This is the third position Labor and the Greens have had in two days.

“I am concerned about how the Government’s scheme is going to operate. It is arbitrarily limited and there is no doubt that people will fall through the cracks.”
