Lead paint removal closes Queanbeyan street

The Queens Bridge, Queanbeyan: Holly Treadaway.

COLLETT Street under the Queens Bridge in Queanbeyan will close from Monday (September 26) for up to six weeks, to remove lead-based paint.

Transport for NSW will carry out the maintenance work on Queens Bridge over the Queanbeyan River after testing of the paint identified quantities of lead that exceeded acceptable levels.

The project will eliminate the risk of lead-based contamination caused by deteriorating paintwork over the Queanbeyan River.

Transport will remove the lead paint from the steel girders under the Queens Bridge by method of abrasive blast.

Works will be conducted using ground scaffolding at either abutment of the bridge and suspended scaffolding along its length, which includes contamination containment casing.

The bridge will then be repainted, with the new coat expected to last a minimum of 20-years, requiring only minor maintenance.
