Minor flood watch issued for Queanbeyan

THE Bureau of Meteorology has issued a minor flood watch for the Queanbeyan and Molonglo Rivers as up to 30mm of rain is predicted to hit the region today (October 5).

According to the State Emergency Service (SES) Queanbeyan Unit, saturated catchments, soil moisture content and Googong Dam being at 100 per cent capacity means that flash flooding is possible in the Queanbeyan River.

The SES says the rain will most likely close the Oaks Estate Crossing, Briars Sharrow and Resches Crossings.

A flood is predicted to close the low level crossing at Morriset street but it is unlikely to impact homes or businesses.

“Heavy rainfall is expected across the Queanbeyan-Palerang council area over the coming days. Already saturated catchments and soil does mean there is an increased risk of flash flooding,” said the SES in a statement.

“We are, as always, urging those traveling to not walk, ride or drive in flood water. The NSW SES Queanbeyan Unit and wider cluster is prepared and ready to respond to anything the upcoming weather throws our way in the coming days.”

If you need the assistance of the NSW SES call 132 500.
