P-plater caught at dangerous speeds in police blitz

AN early-morning crackdown on speeding yesterday (September 20) saw police catch three Canberra drivers traveling at dangerous speeds, including a P-plater doing 114km/h in an 80km/h zone

The 19-year-old was stopped by police at about 6.55am on Canberra Avenue, driving a silver Toyota Hilux.

He was issued a traffic infringement notice (TIN) for speeding, incurring a $700 fine and four demerit points.

Earlier that morning, officers stationed on Canberra Avenue in Fyshwick also caught a silver Holden Commodore travelling at 135km/h in an 80km/h zone.

The driver, a 32-year-old man, was issued a TIN for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h, which attracted a $1841 fine and six demerit points.

In the same morning a 25-year-old woman was also observed in a green Ford Falcon speeding at 112km/h on the posted 70km/h road along Pialligo Avenue. She was fined $700 and accrued four demerit points.

Officer in Charge of Road Policing, Detective Acting Inspector Paul Hutcheson said “enough is enough”.

“This type of reckless driving puts the lives of other road users at significant risk,” said Hutcheson.

“It is quite simply a selfish behaviour that shows no understanding of the long lasting and life changing consequences road trauma has on our community.

“To anyone who has someone in their life who drives like this, I say it’s time to help change their behaviour. Have that difficult conversation today.”
