YOU can tell from the group photo just how much fun Canberra Rep is having with its sixth production of the year, “Sense and Sensibility”, opening this week for a three-week run.
Staged by Cate Clelland, who has replaced the late Liz Bradley as director, it is playwright Kate Hamill’s version of the novel by Jane Austen, which is described unashamedly by the company as “quite sophisticated nonsense”.
Clelland believes audiences will experience a story that stands the test of time and says the play is about two sisters, finding their soulmates, “but more importantly, it’s about the relationship between the two. It’s more about the sisters finding each other than finding love.”
She says it’s the perfect springtime, rom-com and argues it’s possibly even more fun today than when Austin first published a novel. You’ll just have to be there to see whether that’s true — and to have a good laugh.
“Sense and Sensibility,” Canberra Rep Theatre, Acton, November 17 (preview) to December 3.
