A TEENAGER who attempted to draw a fake handgun on police has been arrested.
Police were pursuing the 15-year-old after reports he had been on a public bus with an imitation gun tucked into his pants.
Witnesses saw the teenager – who had been involved in a similar firearm incident last week – reveal the weapon to his friends while on the bus, before getting off the bus and entering the Gungahlin Marketplace.
When police later attempted to arrest the teenager, he drew the gun from his pants before it was knocked to the ground by police.
Detective Superintendent Mick Calatzis said the “brazen” carrying of a gun, comes after similar incidents involving replica firearms in recent weeks.
“We have seen an increase in people carrying weapons that to the naked eye would look like a real firearm,” he said.
“Gel blasters and imitation firearms are unlawful in the ACT and police are working hard to get these weapons off Canberra streets.”
