THE National Capital Authority (NCA) has announced that development consultancy firm SMEC will oversee the design of the $137 million Commonwealth Avenue Bridge renewal project.

The firm which is a subsidiary of urban and industrial development giant, Surbana Jurong Group, was awarded the tender and is expected to take 10 months to finalise the design.

The project will involve strengthening and widening works to increase the bridge’s load-bearing capacity to reflect current and forecast traffic load demands, augment vehicle and pedestrian safety barriers, and accommodate wider shared pedestrian and cycleway paths.

The project is expected to commence in late 2023 and be completed by 2024/25.

The chosen firm has been involved in a number of large infrastructure developments, including Snowy Hydro 2.0, ARTC’s Inland Rail, NorthEast Link and Sydney Metro West.

SMEC ANZ CEO James Phillis said the integrated and urban design approach will be “sympathetic to the existing bridge, its heritage and location.”

NCA Chief Sally Barnes said major projects along Commonwealth Avenue, including the Raising of London Circuit and future Light Rail works, will not hamper business and community activities.

“There will be public consultation at relevant stages and the NCA will give regular updates to all stakeholders until the project is completed,” she said.
