Traffic chaos looms across city

LONDON Circuit will close tomorrow (December 2) as the government pushes on with its plans to extend light rail to the south.

Major traffic disruption is expected with the southern end of London Circuit between Edinburgh Avenue and Constitution Avenue closing.

Two clover-leaf exits to the west of Commonwealth Avenue will also be closed permanently, as work continues on the raising London Circuit project.

Minister for Transport Chris Steel has urged motorists to “rethink” the route they choose when travelling into the city.

“While efforts will continue to be made to minimise disruption throughout construction, Canberrans are encouraged to rethink their routine by riding, walking or scooting, using public transport or avoiding travel during peak periods where possible,” he said.

“Traffic mitigation measures are now operational to maintain traffic flow, this includes traffic lights on Vernon Circle to regulate traffic movements.

“Bus diversions will be in place for several routes but no bus stops will be missed.”

Detours will be in place to maintain access to Constitution Avenue, City east and west and Parkes Way eastbound from Commonwealth Avenue during the works.

Perhaps the ACT electorate might “rethink” the disastrous greenslabor government at the next election and get rid of them. We might then have some sensible decisions rather than the ones we have now!

I expect only the retired and bored will be aware of the closures and plan differently. Given the total chaos along Parkes Way at the moment, some sort of aerial transport system supported by the hot air from Barr and Steel’s offices may be the better choice to get anywhere.

I suggested a heliport on Haig Park so you could quickly commute from your regional lifestyle block into the city in your R22. Handy for those in Braddon. It would need tarmac and hangers along one side so you could push your heli off the landing spot quickly and conveniently.

A refueling tanker from the airport might do a daily lunchtime top up, especially for long distance commuters from down on the coast or alps.
