Barr reshuffles cabinet as election looms

Police Minister Mick Gentleman… lost Planning and Corrections for Business and Cultural Affairs.

CHIEF Minister Andrew Barr has reshuffled his pre-election cabinet, largely at the expense of  Minister Mick Gentleman.

As the government heads into an election year, Gentleman has lost the controversial portfolios of Planning and Corrections and picks up the less electorally sensitive portfolios of Business and Multicultural Affairs.

Minister Chris Steel will add the Planning portfolio, previously held by Gentleman, to his Transport role. “Minister Steel will work with Deputy Chief Minister Berry and myself on the delivery of the government’s comprehensive housing supply plan through the territory’s new planning system,” says Barr.

Emma Davidson will take on Gentleman’s portfolio as Minister for Corrections. Her current portfolio responsibilities in community services and health will now include community sector reform and a new portfolio of population health.

Former Business Minister Tara Cheyne has been promoted to City Services and will be responsible for the delivery of the government’s suburban renewal program. She will also lead the government’s night-time economy and creative industry reforms.

Mick Gentleman keeps the Police portfolio, with new responsibilities for crime-prevention.

“This will include a focus on recidivism and the implementation of the National Firearms Register in the ACT,” Barr says.

“Minister Gentleman will also be the new minister for Business and adds Multicultural Affairs to his portfolio responsibilities.”

Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith will add Disability to her portfolios.

Rebecca Vassarotti will add Parks and Land Management to her current environment portfolio responsibilities.

Dangerous December strikes in the ACT!

Two things stand out – the speed of this announcement following the Qld Premier’s announcement – cue redirection statement as Barr is now the longest serving in the country, I think, as is well on the nose.

Second point – what a shallow talent pool we have when it is written down. Any residual wondering about a new messiah waiting in the wings is now firmly out the window (with the window locked and barred (pun intended))…

Rachel Stephen-Smith is already underperforming in Health, can’t manage that portfolio. Now she has an extra task with Disabilities. Two important portfolios will have a lacklustre Minister.

Should Barr do a ScoMo and become minister for everything?

If you unpick how things seem to be operating these days, it would appear that Barr has put that into place for himself.

But he needs public scapegoats should something not go well.
