Emergency Alert helps find missing woman

A MISSING 77-year-old woman has been found with ACT Policing’s first use of the Emergency Alert system.

The Pearce woman was reported missing by family on Tuesday afternoon. A police search of the surrounding area failed to find her.

A media release and social media posts were issued, but still the woman had not been found.

Police say with her family growing more concerned for her welfare, a geo-located SMS Emergency Alert was issued at 10.15pm, which went to more than 60,000 mobile phones in the Woden area.

The missing woman was found shortly before 11.00pm in bushland in the Mount Taylor Nature Reserve near Chifley.

The member of the public who found her, lived nearby and had checked outside after they received the Emergency Alert.

ACT Policing may use this alert system for emergencies including high-risk missing persons, terrorist incidents, active offender incidents, or Amber Alerts; the ACT Emergency Services Agency will continue to use the Emergency Alert system for incidents including fire, floods, or significant storms.

Police say the Emergency Alert is sent by the number 0444 444 444 – Canberrans are being asked to save this number in their phone as ‘Emergency Alert’ so they are not caught off-guard.
