Mental health minister ‘not up to the job’, says Hanson

FOLLOWING revelations last week that ACT patient health records were sent to the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation without consent, Deputy Opposition Leader Jeremy Hanson will move a motion of no-confidence in Mental Health Minister Emma Davidson in the Assembly on Tuesday.

“Under this Minister we have seen the Dhulwa Mental Health Unit become unsafe for nurses and patients, requiring WorkSafe ACT to step in; no clarity on the death of a patient in a mental health facility; a report highlighting dysfunction and a toxic environment within her own office and now a serious breach of patient records,” Mr Hanson said.

“Ms Davidson has been aware that private health records were deliberately leaked to a union for some time and instead of fronting up and alerting the public, she remained silent until the breach was brought to light by the Canberra Liberals.

“This is a common pattern by Ms Davidson who has continually failed vulnerable Canberrans in her position as Mental Health Minister and has shown time and time again she is simply not up to the job.”

A shocking situation!

The privacy of people suffering from mental health problems is paramount, given the stigma they can suffer as a result of their person information being exposed. Masses of research has shown how people with mental health problems are discriminated against long term, including by the medical professions. People with mental health problems often have their physical health problems ignored and dismissed, because their physical complaints are not taken seriously. Equity can only occur when privacy is protected.

There needs to be a very thorough investigation of the situation along with changes in practice, to ensure that private mental health information is only revealed with patient consent. We need to know why entire records were sent (without consent) to a union. Vague statements about safety are insufficient to explain the situation. Why did the entire union need to know, rather than individual practitioners who were dealing with the situation? And why was consent not sought and obtained? This issue goes to everyone’s confidence in ACT Mental Health and willingness to seek help when needed.
