Shortis and Simpson join Braidwood’s Mikelangelo, The Balkan Elvis

Mikelangelo, The Balkan Elvis, is the next subject of Shortis and Simpson’s “Under The Influence” series, reports HELEN MUSA in this week’s “Artsweek” column.

BUNGENDORE’S Shortis and Simpson join Braidwood’s Mikelangelo, The Balkan Elvis, in the next edition of “Under The Influence”, with The Reprobates – Matt Nightingale on bass, Jon “Jonesy” Jones on drums and percussion and Dave O’Neill on guitars, fiddle and mandolin. The Q, Queanbeyan, November 3-4.

GEOFF’S Poetry at Smiths will feature poets Geoff Goodfellow, from Adelaide, and Russell Erwin, from Crookwell. Smiths Alternative, November 6.

“THE Visitors” by Jane Harrison, directed by Wesley Enoch is at The Playhouse, November 8-11.

Concerts

  • ORFEEVI Ritmi, led by Alister Price on accordion, presents an evening of Balkan music, songs and dances, also featuring singer Desi Gancheva and percussionist Rosco Heck. Polish White Eagle Club, Turner, November 3.
  • MT Ainslie Music Club appears at Ainslie Main Hall, Ainslie Arts Centre, Braddon, November 2.
  • WESLEY Music Centre, Forrest, lunchtime concert series on November 8  features Canberra pianist Stuart Long performing four works for solo piano by Poulenc, Ravel, Debussy and Chaminade.
  • SINGER-songwriter Damien Leith will perform “Roy Orbison Orchestrated” at Canberra Theatre, November 3.
  • THE Kingsland Strings, with players aged between eight and 12, and CSO String Quartet will present a series of intimate performances during the CSO’s Fundraising Gala at Gandel Hall, National Gallery, November 3.
  • GUITAR Trek members Matt Withers and Callum Henshaw will showcase new Australian music for guitar, including works by composers Ross Edwards, Richard Charlton, Nat Bartsch, Sally Greenaway and Elena Kats-Chernin. Wesley Music Centre, November 4.
  • MUSICA da Camera’s final concert this year will be “An Afternoon of Baroque,” directed by John Ma. Holy Covenant Church, Cook, November 4 and Gunning Shire Hall, November 5
  • CANBERRA flautist Sally Walker joins harpist Emily Granger for a Canberra concert on their Australian tour to mark the release of their first CD collaboration, “Something Like This”. Greenaway Studio, Chapman, November 5.
  • IGITUR Nos will perform Mozart’s Requiem (for All Souls’ Day service) at St Paul’s, Manuka, 5pm, November 5.
  • SUPERSTAR Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez will perform at Llewellyn Hall on November 7.

Exhibitions

  • “BLAZE” – art works by Zev Aviv, Lucy Chetcuti, Tilly Davey, Isaac Kairouz, Siobhan O’Connor and Gabriela Renee, and curated by Alexander Boynes – is at Canberra Contemporary Art Space, Parkes, November 3-December 3.
  • NANCY Sever Gallery is holding a celebration of artist Michael Taylor at age 90 with a speech by scholar and critic Sasha Grishin on November 5. Taylor’s show continues at the gallery, above King O’Malley’s in Civic, until November 12.
  • TUGGERANONG Arts Centre has two new exhibitions, “Flash Back —A Fresh Funk Retrospective” until December 15 and “Small Blessings”, handmade felted objects made by Lynn Petersen, until January 27.
