Teens arrested for gym car thefts

TWO teenage boys, aged 16 and 17, are facing the ACT Children’s Court following their arrest in relation to the theft of cars from Gungahlin gyms.

At 1.05pm on Wednesday, police allege the pair stole a backpack from a gym located on Crinigan Circuit, Gungahlin.

The teens then used keys they found in the backpack to steal a red Holden Barina from the gym’s car park.

Police further allege at 1.15pm the same day, the pair went to another gym on Hibberson Street, where they stole a handbag and, subsequently, a white Holden Commodore.

Officers attended both locations and identified the offenders from CCTV footage.

At 2pm on Thursday, police saw the 17-year-old in Duffy, where he was arrested after being found hiding in bushes.

He has been charged with breaching a good behaviour order, joint commission aggravated burglary, and two counts of joint commission taking a motor vehicle without consent.

A short time later, the 16-year-old was arrested at a house in Duffy.

He has been charged with two counts of taking a motor vehicle without consent, as well as a charge of burglary, an active arrest warrant for other offences, and breach of bail.

Police enquiries are ongoing, and further charges against the pair and others may occur.

Sadly, I wasn’t at all surprised to see “breaching a good behaviour bond”, “breach of bail” and “active arrest warrant” on the list of offences for these two boys. Seems an ongoing problem, and not just with these two, that no one can successfully deal with. What’s the answer? Clearly the current processes aren’t working.
Those two gyms perhaps need to provide secure storage for members to put their belongings in, too.

Hardly surprising nowdays Jane – it’s common.
Youths know nothing will really happen. I predict more crime to come which is helped by the Labor/Greens here in the ACT raising the age of criminal responsibility.
A 10 year old knows that graffiti, vandalism, stealing etc.. is a crime. To suggest only at the age of 14 can a youth comprehend the concept of crime is absurd.
I can’t praise Police efforts enough – they deserve all the funding and pay rises they want. It’s the law and courts that give us the problems we have.
Mandatory sentencing is required at some point, as you say; “clearly the current processes aren’t working”.
The saying “If you do the crime ….” simply doesn’t apply anymore.
