Woman facing court for theft, assaulting police

A 35-year-old woman is facing court after she, and two men, allegedly stole several hundred dollars’ worth of alcohol from a Kambah liquor store, before assaulting police.

At 11.45am on Monday officers attended the Kambah store in response to a report that alcohol had been stolen.

A short time later officers located the trio, matching the descriptions of the offenders, cycling along a nearby footpath. When officers approached, one man fled the scene, while the other two were detained.

When officers searched their backpacks, they found the stolen alcohol and a small silver hatchet, and the duo were arrested.

As police transported the 35-year-old woman to their vehicle, she resisted arrest and hit, kicked and attempted to bite the officers.

After several warnings, police used pepper spray to get the woman into the vehicle, however two officers received minor injuries during the arrest.

The woman, who was on a good behaviour order at the time of the arrest, will face the ACT Magistrates Court charged with two counts of assaulting a frontline community service provider, possession of stolen property, weapon possession, obstruct/resist a territory official and breaching a good behaviour order.

The man was released from custody and will be summonsed to court at a later date.

Enquiries into the third man, who fled from police, are ongoing.
