An elderly man will face court accused of sexually assaulting an 87-year-old woman at a Sydney aged care home.

Police were called to the facility in the city’s northwest on Friday following reports a resident had been attacked.

Officers were told a man known to visit the facility had entered the woman’s room on two occasions before sexually assaulting her.

She was treated by paramedics at the home and then taken to Royal North Shore Hospital.

It was determined she had not suffered serious physical injury.

A crime scene was established before detectives executed a search warrant at a home in Asquith about 7.40pm and arrested an 80-year-old man.

He has been charged with aggravated sex assault, sexually touching another person and failing to comply with a direction regarding the storage of a firearm.

The man was refused bail to appear in Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.

The alleged assault follows another on New Year’s Day of a woman in her room at an aged care facility on the NSW north coast.

It’s alleged the 76-year-old was able to fight the intruder off following the early morning attack by scratching him and kicking him in the groin.

A 29-year-old man is before the courts accused of the assault.

A 90-year-old woman in a Central Coast nursing home was also fatally attacked in November.

The alleged 34-year-old intruder broke into the residence about 12.40am and used bedding to silence her calls for help.

She died of her injuries almost two weeks later.

The accused man in that case has been remanded in custody ahead of his next appearance at Gosford Local Court next month.
