One might not consider Macbeth a fun play, says JOE WOODWARD.

It is regarded as one of Shakespeare’s darkest works. Yet the open-air performance presented by The Q and Lakespeare provided for a most enjoyable and even light-hearted afternoon and twilight presentation.

This was achieved by pacey performances that didn’t take it all too seriously. The audience was taken into the scheme of the work at every turn.

Performed on the grass in front of a tent offering a back-stage area, the actors at once had to be larger than life and capable of using their physicality and very clear diction to advance the story.

One of Canberra’s best-known conductors is headi

One of Canberra’s best-known conductors is heading for the big time in the US, says arts editor HELEN MUSA.

Leonard Weiss, who is presently assistant conductor with the @melbournesymphonyorchestra, has been selected as a conducting fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center in Massachusetts and will make his debut there on July 7 conducting works by Smetana.

Tanglewood is the summer home and learning campus of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, with whom Weiss will make his conducting debut in 2026.

One of only two conducting fellows selected from applicants around the world, Weiss is a Canberran who for many years conducted with @canberrasymphonyorchestra, Canberra Sinfonia and most other major orchestras in the ACT.

Gardening columnist JACKIE WARBURTON says to keep an eye out for a special orchid growing wild that can be easily missed among grass and shrubs.

Among the native bluebells, everlasting strawflowers and other wildflowers to be seen growing in the hills in and around Canberra at this time is the Pink Hyacinth Orchid.

I have seen them growing wild over the years at Wee Jasper after good rains. They are small and can be easily missed among grass and shrubs.

The Pink Hyacinth Orchid (Dipodium roseum) is leafless and only the flowering stem can be seen this time of the year. They are unique in being the only semi-parasitic genus of orchids to be found in the ACT. They lack chlorophyll and depend on mycorrhizal fungus in the roots of specific species trees of the myrtaceous family to grow and survive.

Rasa Kabaila was the youngest personal carer at a war veterans home at age 16, reports ELIZABETH KOVACS.

“When I was 15, I did work placement in a pediatric ward and then I did another placement at a war veterans home in Canberra,” she says.

“As much as I found it interesting, I found it all quite confronting.

“I was always told by people in [the war veterans home] that they hoped I would become a nurse,” she says.

“I was the youngest carer employed there at the time and I was working in the high-care dementia wing.”
