The ACT Government is preparing new laws to ban members of outlaw motorcycle gangs from displaying insignia in public.
Draft legislation would prohibit the public display of gang-related patches, logos and other symbols used to identify membership, intimidate the community or recruit new members.
ACT Chief Police Officer Scott Lee said police supported the move, noting gang insignia was often used to exert control and intimidate others.
“We know that OMCGs use the display of their patches and insignia to intimidate the wider community, exert power and control and as a recruiting tool,” he said.
He said the proposed changes would assist police efforts to disrupt organised crime and improve community safety.
The proposed ban would apply to insignia worn on clothing or jewellery, as well as items such as flags, signs and markings on vehicles in public places.
