Canberra Liberals Leader Mark Parton will move for a fresh inquiry into ACT fuel prices today after Canberra recorded the highest average petrol price of any capital city last week.

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission data shows Canberra’s average retail petrol price reached 234.3 cents a litre on September 16, the highest of the eight capitals monitored. It was up 17.3 cents in a week, also the largest increase among the capitals.

Mr Parton says current FuelCheck data also shows Canberra petrol prices about 10 cents a litre higher than Queanbeyan, while prices reported by PetrolSpy were cheaper in some regional centres.

“Families are being slugged every time they fill up, and this chaotic ACT Labor Government cannot even say what it has asked the ICRC to do about it,” Mr Parton says.

The Legislative Assembly established a select committee to investigate ACT fuel prices in 2019, including pricing discrepancies between Canberra and other communities, competition and possible regulatory responses. It recommended establishing a standing committee to monitor fuel pricing and competition.

The Independent Competition and Regulatory Commission also investigated petrol prices and competition that year, finding prices were influenced by factors including wholesale costs, market structure, competition and retail costs and margins.

Mr Parton’s motion calls for the Standing Committee on Economics, Industry and Recreation to examine whether the factors identified in 2019 continue to influence Canberra prices and whether existing ICRC and Fair Trading measures are effective.

The proposed inquiry would be required to report interim findings by December 3 and a final report by February 26.
