Goodwin Village Downer has opened, marking the completion of more than 120 new homes for older Canberrans, including affordable rental options.

The development on Melba Street includes 109 independent living apartments and 20 serviced apartments designed to support older residents to live independently for longer.

A key feature of the project is a partnership with Community Housing Canberra to provide affordable rental homes within the village, aimed at broadening access to retirement living.

The development also features Finnish-designed HUR wellness equipment, with the opening attended by Finland’s deputy head of mission, Ahti Torronen, recognising the partnership.

Goodwin chief executive Stephen Holmes said the village represented a major investment in housing and services for older Canberrans.

“Goodwin Village Downer represents a major investment in contemporary housing and services for seniors, but more importantly, it cements Goodwin’s ongoing commitment to creating vibrant, connected and supportive environments for older Australians,” he said.

Board chair Fiona Jolly said the project reflected the organisation’s long-standing commitment to providing choice and independence for older people.

She said Goodwin’s partnership with Community Housing Canberra would help ensure high-quality retirement living remained accessible to a broader range of Canberrans.

Goodwin, a Canberra-owned not-for-profit organisation established in 1954, operates residential aged care, home care, allied health services, seniors’ day clubs and retirement villages across the ACT and the NSW south coast.
