Canberrans will soon be able to cash in more bottles and cans, with the ACT government expanding the Container Deposit Scheme.

More drink containers will become eligible for the 10-cent refund, including wine and spirits bottles, cordials and juices, as well as larger containers of up to three litres.

The scheme has already paid out more than $43 million since launching in 2018, with more than 430 million containers returned across the territory.

Environment Minister Suzanne Orr says the expansion will pull millions more containers out of landfill.

“We expect the expansion will result in an additional eight million containers collected and 400 tonnes of recyclable material being diverted from landfill in the first year,” she said.

The changes have strong public backing, with more than 90 per cent of people surveyed supporting the move, many seeing it as a win for schools, charities and community groups.

The expanded scheme will start no earlier than mid-2027. Until then, the newly added containers won’t be accepted at return points and should stay in household recycling bins.

The government will update regulations in the coming months as it works with industry to roll out the changes.
