THE next instalment of the dance project “IGNITE: Room to Move” begins at Belconnen Arts Centre this weekend.

Led by dancers Debora di Centa and Helena Maria da Costa, it’s billed as a fantasy journey, aimed at warding off the Canberra cold with laughter and movement.

In free Saturday classes, “IGNITE” will propose different ways to move, interact and explore dancing by experimenting with diverse stimuli and ideas. Each class will start with a brief introduction, followed by a warm up and a phase of creative tasks with a final group sharing.

The focus will be on improvisation, commencing with a warm-up of the body and the brain in the chosen dance style for the workshop, then progressing to guided exercises and tasks learning more about that selected dance form, sometimes on one’s own, or with a partner.

The sessions are open to people young and young at heart, living with and without disability, at all levels of experience. People with disabilities are generally required to bring a carer with them, who is of course invited to join in the class too. Younger dancers are also welcome, provided they have a responsible adult with them.

Participants should wear comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle.
