Canberra Liberals Ed Cocks and Deborah Morris are calling for more police patrols in Molonglo and a delivery plan for a promised police station, saying residents have raised concerns about home invasions, property crime and police response times.

Mr Cocks says residents at community forums in Wright, Coombs, Denman Prospect and surrounding suburbs reported forming neighbourhood WhatsApp groups and taking self-defence classes, while some claimed police response times of 15 to 25 minutes.

“People in Molonglo are telling us they are afraid in their own homes,” Mr Cocks says.

The Liberals say some residents have also stopped reporting incidents because they do not believe an effective police response will follow.

Shadow Minister for Police, Emergency Services and Community Safety Deborah Morris says police resources are stretched and is calling for regular patrols in crime hotspots until a Molonglo police station is delivered.

The ACT government has committed to building a new police station in Molonglo, with a needs and scope analysis underway. In March, the government told the Legislative Assembly the work was being undertaken through funding for the Molonglo town centre delivery strategy.

The government provided $2.5 million in the 2025-26 budget for planning, including detailed analysis of future police accommodation in Molonglo and the Woden patrol zone. During estimates hearings last year, Police Minister Marisa Paterson said the scoping work would help determine what the Molonglo station should look like and its role in the broader policing network.

Mr Cocks says the Liberals have pushed for a Molonglo police station since 2019 and want the government to provide a delivery timetable.

The motion will be debated in the Legislative Assembly today.
