There is something about a performance by top-class musicians who’ve played together for decades, says reviewer MICHAEL WILSON.

There’s no fuss: no apprehension about what other players might do in the moment. So it was for the final concert of the Selby & Friends season, when Kathryn Selby (piano) was joined by Julian Smiles (cello) and Dimity Hall (violin) for a varied and challenging program of piano trios connecting Germany, France, Spain and Latvia.

In this intimate venue, each musician introduced pieces in their personal styles. Like any good host, Selby made sure her guests shone throughout, even at times where the piano line dominated. Fresh from their farewell tour as one half of the Goldner String Quartet, Hall and Smiles blended seamlessly when that was required, and emphasised discordance when called for, especially in the program’s title work by Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks.

The trophies were about to be given out at the prestigious annual riesling event that Canberra hosts says wine writer, Richard Calver.

It was a rainy evening and the 23rd International Canberra Riesling Challenge Awards were held at the Hotel Realm where I scored an invitation.

As usual there was a mammoth task visited on the judges, having to taste and grade 326 Rieslings from 140 wineries across five countries, Australia, France, Germany, NZ and the US.

As the Canberra Riding Club’s Pony Club celebrates 65 years, its future in Lyneham is in doubt as the ACT government eyes housing development around the racecourse precinct.

One of the oldest of 14 pony clubs around Canberra, the club says it is facing “an onslaught of existential crises, from rising lease rates to potential land redevelopment, which cast a shadow on [its] future.”

Under the direction of Lauren Davis, the leader of Limestone Consort, a chamber ensemble based in Canberra, which formed in 2012 out of a desire to perform baroque music, but today she led Musica da Camera with Aaron Reichelt, who is one of Australia’s most versatile and experienced oboists.
