It’s off to walk we go

THOUSANDS of people will be walking to work tomorrow as part of the Cancer Council’s Walk to Work Day.

According to the Cancer Council, people who walk before and during work are generally healthier, more productive and creative and less likely to be absent or on sick-leave. Regular walking is also said to help relieve feelings of depression or anxiety.

Pedestrian Council of Australia chairman Harold Scruby said considering the amount of people expected to be walking on the pavement tomorrow, all Canberra drivers should be extra careful and keep an eye out for pedestrians, particularly during the peak hour rush.

“This year’s Walk to Work Day is shaping up to be the best yet and there has been such a great response from the Canberra community,” Mr Scruby said.

“We want everyone who takes part tomorrow to have fun and stay safe, so we hope all drivers will be careful and courteous when itcomes to pedestrians. Maybe leave for work a few minutes early to cater for the extra foot traffic, or even better, leave the car at home and join them!”

A special lunchtime activity will be held at Garema Place with the Pedestrian Council of Australia and the Cancer Council ACT will reward walkers with free fresh fruit, walking gear and handouts from the Cancer Council.
